Verse 1
From Sumati down to Gaya· Verses 1–6
1Bharata's son was called Sumati. Some men of false doctrine, and others with nothing noble in them, who follow the track of Rsabha, will in the Kali age set him up, by their own most wicked contriving, as a god the Veda does not name. 2From him, on Vrddhasena, a son named Devatajit was born. 3Then his son by Asuri was Devadyumna; from him, on Dhenumati, a son Paramesthin; and from Paramesthin, on Suvarcala, Pratiha came into the world. 4He taught the knowledge of the self, and being himself made wholly clean he held the great Person in mind. 5From Pratiha, on Suvarcala, came three sons, Pratiharta and the others, skilled in offering. To Pratiharta, on Stuti, Aja and Bhuman were born.
6From Bhuman, on Rsikulya, came Udgitha; from him, on Devakulya, Prastava; from Prastava, on Niyutsa, came Vibhu, born of his heart; from Vibhu, on Rati, Prthusena; from him, on Akuti, Nakta was born; and from Nakta the son of Druti, Gaya, first among royal sages, whose fame is open-handed. He was a portion of the Bhagavan Visnu himself, who takes on clarity out of a wish to guard the world, and by self-possession and the other marks he came to be a great Person.
