Though he is beyond the strands, unborn and unshown, the Bhagavan beyond nature enters the strands of his own maya and comes into a standing where there is thwarting and being thwarted. Clarity, passion and darkness are the strands of nature, not of the self. They do not sink or rise all at one time, king. When clarity wins he takes the side of the gods and the sages, when passion the antigods, when darkness the yaksas and raksasas, going along with the time as it runs. He shows like light and what follows from light, and is not marked off from the mass. Churning, the wise at last find the self that stands within the self.

When the Highest would send out the cities that are his own, by his own maya he sends out passion by itself; wanting to take his pleasure in their variety, the Lord sends out clarity; and about to lie down, he stirs up darkness. The Lord, who makes truth hold, sends out time as it moves, a ground for nature and the Person, ruler of men. And this time too, king, is a ruler, and by it he makes clarity swell like an army of the gods. Then, dear to the gods and of wide renown, he cuts down the antigods ranged against them, who are of passion and darkness.
