It was he who churned the sea and made the nectar ready for the gods, and who in the form of a tortoise held up Mandara as it turned in the water. How, brahmin, was the ocean of milk churned by the Bhagavan? For what did he hold up the mountain, and why, in the shape of one who lives in the water? How was the nectar got by the gods, and what else came about from it? Tell me this act of the Bhagavan's, which is past all wonder. My mind, long burnt by its burning, does not get its fill of the greatness of the lord of the Satvatas as you tell it out. So asked, brahmins, the revered son of Dvaipayana welcomed the question and set about telling of the might of Hari.
