In the first month of the cold season the young girls of Nanda's Vraja kept a vow of worshipping Katyayani, eating only what had first been offered. They bathed in the water of the Kalindi at the water's edge when the dawn had come up, made an image of the goddess out of sand, and worshipped her, king. with scents and garlands, with sweet-smelling offerings, with incense and lamps, and with gifts great and small, new shoots and fruit and grains of rice. Katyayani, great maya, great yogini, mistress and ruler, goddess: make the son of Nanda the cowherd my husband. To you my bow. Saying this prayer over, the girls made their worship.

So for a month the girls kept the vow, their minds on Krsna, and worshipped Bhadrakali: let Nanda's son be my husband.
