So they heard the Bhagavan's asking and did not hear it: their hopes small, their ritual work heavy, childish, and taking themselves for grown men. Place, time, the several things laid out, the mantras and the procedure, the priests, the fires, the god, the sacrificer, the rite and the dharma — the one of whom all these are made, him, the highest Brahman himself, the Bhagavan beyond the reach of the senses, they did not recognize; their understanding was poor, they looked with human eyes, and their selves were mortal. They did not say yes and they did not say no, scorcher of enemies; and the cowherds came back with nothing and told Krsna and Rama how it had gone.

Hearing it, the Bhagavan, the Lord of the world, laughed and spoke to the cowherds again, showing them the way the world goes.
