30He should not delight in the talk of the Veda about rewards, nor be a scoffer, nor a mere reasoner. In dry argument and dispute he should take up no side at all. 31The steady man should not shrink from people, nor make people shrink from him. He should bear hard words and should look down on no one. For the body's sake he should make himself no one's enemy, as an animal does. 32The one Self, the highest, stands in beings and in himself, as the moon stands in bowls of water; and beings have that one self. 33He should not sink when at any time, meal after meal, he gets nothing; and getting something, he should not be delighted. Holding firm, he sees both as in the hands of what is allotted.
34He should make some effort for food, since that is what holds the breath and is proper. By it what is real is thought through, and knowing that, he is set free. 35The sage should eat the food that comes to him of itself, the best of it or the poorer; and so with a garment, and so with a bed: whatever comes, he takes.
