If the word divides, how does it free· Verses 1–5

1Your revealed word, Lord, both what it lays down and what it forbids, looks to the merit and the fault in men's works, lotus-eyed one; 2and to the sorting of men by class and stage, and to birth against the grain of it and with the grain; and to substances, places, ages and times; and to heaven, and to hell. 3Without a sight that divides merit from fault, how could your word, which is marked by its forbidding and its laying down, be the highest good of men? 4Your Veda is the eye of the fathers, the gods and men, Lord, and their good, in a matter no eye reaches, and in what is to be brought about and what brings it about.
5The sight that divides merit from fault comes from your revealed word and not of itself; and by that same word the dividing is taken back. So there is a bewilderment here.
