Knowledge shines out in the form of the understanding, the senses and their objects, and it rests on them: a thing that is no thing, with a beginning and an end, because it is seen and because it is not other than what sees. The lamp, the eye and the shape are not separate from light. So the understanding, the openings of the senses and the fine elements would not be, apart from that one thing that is real. Waking, dreaming and deep sleep are said to belong to the understanding. This manyness in the self within is maya and nothing more, king. As clouds come to be in the sky and cease to be, so is this world in Brahman, rising and going down as a thing that has parts.

What is real is called here the part in everything that has parts. Apart from the thing meant, they would still show themselves, dear one, as the threads of a cloth do. Whatever is taken hold of through the general and the particular is taken with a confusion in it; for it all leans one thing on another, and it is a thing that is no thing, with a beginning and an end. A change, even while it shows itself, cannot be pointed to at all apart from the self within, not so much as an atom of it. If it could, it would be like awareness, as the self is. There is no manyness in what is real, though a man who does not know thinks there is: as there is a manyness of two holes, or of two lights, or of two winds.
