From the stirring of the strands in what is undivided comes the great principle, and from the great principle threefold I-making. The coming to be of the elements, the subtle elements, the senses and their objects is called the sending out. The gathering together of these, once they have been given grace by the Person, made of the traces they carry, seed out of seed, moving and unmoving: this is the sending forth. The keeping alive is beings living upon beings: for the ones that move, the ones that do not; and among men it is made there by their own choosing, out of desire, or else out of what is commanded. The guarding is the doings of the Unfallen in his descents, following the world age after age, among animals, men, sages and gods, by which the haters of the three Vedas are killed.

The interval of a Manu is said to be of six kinds: the Manu, the gods, the sons of Manu, the lords of the gods, the sages, and the descents of Hari by portions. The line is the succession, through the three times, of kings born from Brahma. What the line did is their doings, and who they were that carried the line on.
