In plain words

People waste their lives believing that happiness depends on body, wife, children, friends, servants, horses and cattle, and remain absorbed in the flesh. Yet they never inquire into the deathless lord within Prāṇa—the life-breath—the presence by which they live, conduct their affairs and enjoy whatever fortune comes.

Thinking, ‘Body, wife, son, friend, servant, horses and bulls are the cause of my satisfaction,’ people spend their lives here in vain inquiries into flesh. They never inquire into the immortal indwelling lord of Prāṇa—the vital breath—by whom they live, act skillfully and enjoy good fortune.
