In plain words
Through Prāṇa, the vital current, one drinks water and eats. Jāṭharāgni, the digestive fire fed by that food, cooks it quickly or slowly. Vyāna distributes the nourishing essence through every Nāḍī, or subtle channel, to sustain the vital breaths, and Apāna carries the foul waste out of the body.

Through Prāṇa one drinks water and eats food. Jāṭharāgni, the gastric fire strengthened by that food, digests it quickly or slowly. Vyāna then carries its nourishing essence through the Nāḍīs of every limb to sustain the vital breaths, while Apāna expels the foul-smelling, essenceless waste from the body.
