In plain words
The sun simply watches the day's activities without doing them itself; fire only lends its burning power to a glowing iron ball, which is not fire itself; a rope only seems to carry a snake that was never really there. Just so it is with me, the unchanging awareness underneath it all.
Close to the Sanskrit
As the sun has the status of witness with regard to action, as fire has the power of burning in iron, and as a rope has an association with a superimposed object, just so is it with me, the unchanging consciousness-Self.
