Yet there is one sacred trait in the snake. What is it? When the snake-charmer's pipe is played, any venomous serpent whatever spreads its hood and dances joyfully to it, merging its whole being in that tune. In the same way, in man, the Manas can be merged in Praṇava through ‘abhyāsa’. So the upāsanā of sound is the principal path to attaining Paramātma. Sound itself is Paramātma. That is why Paramātma declared, “I Myself am the power of puruṣārtha in man.” Puruṣakāra is the very life-breath of man. If that puruṣakāra has no life-breath in it, there is no humanity at all. Whatever the prārabdha, it must bow down and submit to puruṣakāra. Puruṣakāra stands ahead of prārabdha. Not knowing this, crying ‘prārabdha, prārabdha’, they cling to prārabdha and flounder — foolish men! Every human being must follow puruṣakāra without fail. If he does not act, such a one cannot live in the world even for half a minute. Paramātma created man to follow puruṣārtha in this world and to become blessed through its power. He did not send you to enjoy pleasures idly, a waste of food and a burden to the earth, with meaningless doings and bestial desires. He did not send you to be a lazybones, never bending your back to work and toil, building up your muscles, smacking your lips and growing stout and fat.
