Passage 11

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

If you become weak, everything frightens you. If there is no stick in hand, even a sheep will frighten you, they say! So faith that belongs to your Ātma is the whole of strength. Only one who lacks it trembles and cowers. Only when we acquire such strength of intellect will the power of consciousness reveal itself to us everywhere. Be wherever you may.

Whether you are in the forests or in the sky, whether in a town or in a village, whether on a hill or fallen into midstream …

wherever you are, your consciousness is with you, before your eyes, in your home, and protects you in every way.

Divine consciousness is within you

We need not strain after consciousness. We need not search for it somewhere. It is within you. Remedy what obstructs consciousness. The whole world is Brahman! All objects are Brahman! All forms too are Brahman! Such a principle itself is what the Upaniṣads taught as the principles of Satya. We must bring out this consciousness that is hidden in us, unseen, concealed. How should we bring it out? In the cold season we put on a vest underneath. Over it we put on a shirt. Over that we put on a thick coat. Wearing such a dress, if we think, ‘My heart is not visible to me!’, how will it be visible? First take off the thick coat you have put on top. Then take off the shirt that is under it. After that take off the vest. Your chest will be visible to you. In the same way, today we have put on a thick coat called tamo-guṇa. Under it we have put on a shirt called rajo-guṇa. So that this shirt does not get dirty, we have put on a thin vest called sāttvika too. When we are covered by these three, how will our heart be visible to us?
