Passage 11

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Their joy is beyond describing. Their faith is that great. If you hold such unwavering faith, God will help you wherever you are.

Be it in the forests, be it in the sky, be it in the town, be it in the village, be it on a hill or fallen in midstream, for the helpless, the refuge is God alone.

So, first of all, you must build up faith in God. Without it, merely building up knowledge is of no use. Say you have built up knowledge as vast as the oceans. Say you have built up common sense as great as the Himālaya mountains. But however much you have, if there is no ‘discrimination’, it is all a waste! “Is this good? Is it bad? Is this work fit to be done? Is it not fit to be done?”: if you have just this one ‘discrimination’, that is enough; you will prosper beyond measure. Within that very ‘discrimination’, ‘self-realisation’ lies contained. So, first of all, you must hold ‘discrimination’ in the right way. Ten people will ‘discriminate’ the same matter in ten ways. That is ‘individual discrimination’: that is, the kind exercised with selfish personal interests in view. We must keep in view not our own interest but the welfare of society. That is ‘fundamental discrimination’. That alone gives us ‘self-satisfaction’. That self-satisfaction itself leads to self-realisation. So ‘fundamental discrimination’ is very important for self-realisation.

True study is that which helps the mind stay steady

Children! You are fine children, like gold. But now and then ‘negative thoughts’ come, in a few ripples and waves. But what comes will go. We must not be shaken by it at all. However many come, we must stay steady, without fear. Our ‘study’ must make the mind ‘steady’. Study to be steady.
