Passage 9

In plain words

Whatever happens, we must welcome it, saying, ‘It is for our good.’ Without sorrow, happiness has no value. Without hardship, man has no happiness. Hardship and happiness are joined one with the other.

Hardship and happiness, the two, stay together; to part them is in no one’s power; happiness on its own we shall see nowhere; when hardship bears fruit, that, they say, is happiness.

You must not think that God is without mercy. God is always full of compassion! He does not hurt anyone in this creation in any way. You make your own pains yourselves. God is the protector of all, the One who gives Śānti and Ānanda to all. ‘May all the worlds be happy’: that alone is God’s resolve. How could God, who is all Prema, give you sorrow! Unable to understand this truth, you blame God, saying, ‘God has given me this hardship.’ If you understand this, you will see that everything is for your good, and you will be able to experience Ānanda. Fill your heart with Ānanda. Share Ānanda alone with everyone. Then Ānanda will grow still more in you.

We must press sorrow down and bring Ānanda out

Embodiments of Prema! This is the Sankrānti of Prema, the Sankrānti of Ānanda, a most wonderful Sankrānti. Welcome such a Sankrānti. Welcome God, who is the very form of Ānanda. ‘O Treasure-house of compassion!’, ‘O Embodiment of Prema!’: God is not satisfied with praise like this. God is full of Ānanda. And so: “O God! Give me too Your Ānanda”: this is how you must pray. You must not ask for worldly things. If you take all the pains that come to us as being for our good, you will always be full of Ānanda. Be full of Ānanda yourselves, and share that Ānanda with those around you.
