The whole world is nothing but God's creation. From worms and insects through beasts, birds and wild animals up to human beings, everything is God's own creation! Since they were created by God, all these have come forth from Ānanda itself. Pains, sorrows, hardships: all these are merely man's imagination! Whatever we think of as pains have in truth come about only to give us joy, not to give us sorrow. Pleasure is an interval between two pains. Without pains, joy does not come to us. So whatever comes, we must take it gladly, saying, ‘All this is God's gift.’ We must not think, ‘This is hardship, pain, hurt.’ To remove a pain that has arisen in the stomach, the doctor performs an operation. In a way, what that doctor inflicts is also pain, is it not! Yet the pain that arose goes away only through the pain he inflicted.
