By me, the Ordainer, whose self is time, this world is set to its works. In this current of the strands it comes up and it goes under. Whatever state comes out plainly, small or huge, thin or thick, every one of them is joined with the two: with Nature and with the Person. That which is the beginning and the end of a thing is its middle as well, being just that. The change between is there for dealing with things, as with what is made of fire and what is made of earth. That which an earlier state takes up in order to change into a later one, when it is the beginning and the end of a thing, is called the real. That whose stuff is Nature, whose support is the supreme Person, and whose bringing to light, when it is, is time: that is Brahman, and I am those three.

The making goes on always, one thing after another, so long as the looking lasts: the great making, whose purpose is the pouring out of the strands, with its standing and its ending. The vast form, taken up by me, which parcels out the worlds and their ages, is made ready, along with its worlds, for the going back into the five, and for what is particular.
