In plain words
Heart means breadth. Is your heart narrow, or is it broad? Is your broad heart joined with Satya, Dharma, Śānti and Prema, or is it against them? When this broad feeling grows in you, the evenness of “I alone am all” arises. Only then: “My Ātma is the Ātma within all beings.” When this feeling has grown in you, whoever you harm, you will be harming none but yourself. Whoever you pain, you will be paining none but yourself. At the time you have recognised such a truth, there will be no room any more to enter into violence.
So we must regard this WATCH, these five letters, as a name of five letters. We must believe that these are the five prāṇas of man. Without these five letters, these five prāṇas, can we call a life a man because of its form? No, no. You may be a man in form, but you are not a true man. Not a man who has human values. Is a man who cannot keep the word he spoke a man at all? Is one who cannot keep the word he gave a man at all? Wretch who cannot carry out your own duty, will you become a man? Such a one is a man in form only; he can never be a man joined with the Ātma.
Do all green birds speak like parrots? Do the worms that crawl over flowers become bees? Does a donkey covered in a tiger's skin itself become a tiger? Do they say a pig grown as fat as an elephant becomes an elephant?
No, no: merely taking on forms does not make one a man. We must grow human values. Only then does he take shape as a man. Today, because such human values are lost, wherever you look people are behaving worse than demons. Look at any paper you like. When you rise at dawn and open it, wherever you look: deaths, murders, shootings. What unholy acts against humanity this world is going through. Humanness itself has gone into hiding. Society has become polluted. Individuality is only taking shape as mere individuality; true individuality is nowhere to be seen. We cannot develop our individuality through our studies. The studies we pursue today are not true studies at all. These studies are turning us into egotists. They lead us into a life of show. People conduct themselves in ways that are Asatya.
