In plain words
Are these your tears? You weep for paltry, passing pleasures of the senses. But not one person is to be seen who weeps for the eternal, for Satya, for the awareness of the Ātma. Merely by learning this education, our heart does not blossom.
Does the snake die if you pound the anthill? If you punish your body, do the pleasures of the senses subside? Do you become a knower of the Ātma merely by giving up food and drink? If you do not know who you are, how can knowledge of the Reality come?
You do not try to know who you are. Instead you try to find out all the news of what happens in the world. After hearing so much news, what use is it if you do not know the nuisance that comes from you? That is why you are becoming useless.
Education is what first of all makes you know yourself. Such is the education we must study. Merely taking on the human form, saying "I am a man, I am a man", one does not become a man.
Do all green birds talk like parrots? Do the worms that crawl over flowers become bees? Does a donkey wrapped in a tiger's skin become a tiger? Does a pig grown as fat as an elephant become an elephant, sir?
So, since we think ourselves human and have taken the human form, we must bear humanness and embrace it. So, students, step forward to foster human values. Do not simply become drunk with these schemes and wiles. Broaden your feelings. You must shape your heart into a divine feeling. You must look on the whole empire as your own home. Only then can you see unity in diversity, the oneness within the manifold.
Students! Only when you honour your parents, love your gurus, trust in God, and offer up your life in many ways, is that right education. This very thing is Mātṛdevo bhava, Pitṛdevo bhava, Ācāryadevo bhava, Atithidevo bhava. Recognise the Divinity that dwells in all human beings. Only then will you set about respecting yourself. Life will flourish in an Ānanda that is divinity itself.
