Passage 9

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Gurus of experience are essential. Gurus who spread the teaching in the form of practice are essential. If we take only books as a support, they cannot give us any fragrance.

When the heart is full of Prema, the vision is full of Brahman

We should not think that all are gurus. We need one who has truly come to know the principle of the guru. What does ‘gurutu’ mean? Knowing. Making known is the very nature of consciousness. How does it make known? It makes known: this is good, this is bad. First of all, at the very outset, we must not think in terms of sameness. Gradually, after recognising the principle of the Ātma that lies within it, we may hold to sameness. To think that all insects are honey-bees, without recognising which insect is of what kind, is madness.

Do all green birds speak like parrots? Do the worms that crawl over flowers become bees? Does a donkey covered in a tiger's skin itself become a tiger? Do they say a pig grown as fat as an elephant becomes an elephant?

So it is an impossible thing to regard everyone as equal. But there is one thing alone that we must develop as evenness. Within oneself one must grow in evenness. Whatever colour of glasses we put on our eyes, we can see the whole world that way. When the heart is full of Prema, our vision is full of Brahman. Without Prema in the heart we may say that all is full of Brahman, but it does not come into our experience. So we must try to recognise well the principle of consciousness. You are all embodiments of consciousness! So, first of all, we must strive to remove gradually, to some extent, what obstructs this consciousness.
