Passage 2

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

This body itself is a great temple. The One who is the Ātma-svarūpa within this body is the Divinity that has taken this form. So when we hold this body to be a temple and try to bring to it the purity that belongs to a temple, Dharma will rise in us. It is because such holy feelings and such conduct have been lost that today body and mind both are falling ill. When we cultivate pure deeds with the body and pure feelings in the mind, both body and mind will enjoy health. Only then can we stay far, far away from the illness called ādhyātmika. Ādhyātmika means precisely that which is afflicted by diseases of body and mind.

Ādhibhautika means this: the body is troubled by certain enemies. It is harmed by certain beasts. It is troubled by worms and insects too. More than all of these, the enemy called death lays siege to this body with its armies of many diseases. This ādhibhautika is full of many kinds of harm. And what does ādhidaivika mean? Without our willing it at all, certain sufferings come upon us. Certain things happen, cholera and plague, thunderbolts, and many kinds of sorrow come upon man. One may go in a motorcycle accident; one may go in a plane accident.

Today only humanness of outer form can be made out; humanness is not seen in conduct or in Ānanda.

Can all green birds speak like parrots? Can the worms that crawl over flowers become bees? Can a donkey covered with a tiger's skin become a tiger?

No. No. Today man lives as a beast covered with a skin called humanness. A crop with no manure, a wire with no current, a school with no teacher. You must make the effort it takes to find out who you are. Who am I? It must begin with this question. They say, "I am so and so." But this belongs to name and form. But it is not the nature. It is my body but I am not the body. This is my mind but I am not the mind. Then who am I? This is my kerchief. The kerchief is seperate from me. When you say "my body", I am different from my body. Then who are you? There is one principle that is the source of all these. That alone is this principle. This humanness is what you must recognise first of all.
