Passage 19

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

But without minding that, we must make every effort to uphold the honour of our institution. That is the gratitude you owe the institution. Those without such gratitude may be called lower than the wild beasts of the forest. Not to this institution alone: wherever it may be, whoever it may be, you must never forget the help done to you. Develop such gratitude and conduct yourselves so as never to be ungrateful. Do not let all your learning be merely reciting ślokas, or reading ślokas and parroting their meanings, and growing proud that you are a scholar. Try to acquire learning that takes the form of practice. This show, this Ahaṅkāra, this possessiveness: all of it is the learning of a rākṣasa. You must truly become people of learning who are embodiments of sākṣara. The true basis for this is Bhakti alone! Install God in your heart, keep Him as the centre of everything, and let every path begin from Him. Only then will these sacred feelings arise in us.

Students! These sports have taken place only as an occasion. The body needs health. In a healthy body there is a healthy mind. A healthy mind gives healthy Ānanda. This Ānanda itself turns into the form of God. So when, through the body, we follow Manas and dedicate Manas to Mādhava, that is the oneness of these three:

Three leaves, the form of the three guṇas, three eyes, three weapons, destroyer of the sins of three births: one bilva leaf, offered to Śiva.

As it is in the bilva leaf, we must make these three one. In the world today there are a great many educated people. There are so many scientists. But they have no happiness or Śānti at all. What great machines they are making! Atom Bomb, Hydrogen Bomb and who knows what else they are making. But all these bombs are frightening those very people.
