Passage 3

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The whole world is a blend of mind and matter! So this world is the joining of matter and mind, the blend of these two. It is through these two alone that man experiences the whole of daily life. He experiences them, but what is this mind? He makes no proper effort to know that. What is more, he says there is no loss at all in not being able to know it. It does not matter? Ask him what is matter, and he says, It is not mind. Is this knowing? He does not know what Mind is. He does not know what Matter is. And yet the whole of daily life is bound up with those two alone. This is man's science. He strives to gather up and know what happens in the whole wide world, but he does not try to recognise the principle of his own inner Ātma. We must try once to recognise the close kinship that science and spirituality have.

Science is rising to great heights, but the senses are sinking into ruin

What is mind? What is this, the scientist goes on asking in his research. But the Saint: what is that? What is that? he goes on asking in his search. This is the difference between the scientist and the saint! What is this? What is that? This and That: if we recognise well the experience of these two, humanness is easily understood.

That is full, this is full; from the full the full comes forth; when the full is taken from the full, the full alone remains.

What do we call ‘this’? We call what is near ‘this’. Near to what? We call what is near to the senses ‘this’. What is ‘that’? ‘That’ means what is far away. Far from what?
