Passage 3

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Food cooked over steam without oil is very good for the health. It gives the eyes good strength; it does much good to those who suffer from asthma, eosinophilia and wheezing. In the same way, every act that has to do with God has an inner meaning. But man cannot recognise this truth.

‘Anityam Asukhaṃ Lokaṃ …’

In every human being there are both the traits of the beast and the traits of Paśupati. But man forgets the traits of Paśupati and develops the traits of the beast. The traits of the beast start from the head. The traits of Paśupati arise from the heart. Today's studies and today's cleverness have both started from the head. Today any scientist at all follows only the power of the intellect that starts from the head. The power of the intellect belongs to pravṛtti. Compassion, Prema, Satya, patience, sympathy and such virtues, which arise from the heart, belong to nivṛtti. Man today develops only the cleverness that belongs to pravṛtti, and does not develop the traits of nivṛtti. “Anityam asukhaṃ lokam imaṃ prāpya bhajasva māṃ,” said the Teacher of the Gītā. In this world there is no happiness, no peace, no Ānanda. That is exactly why we must worship God. We must give up the path of pravṛtti and enter the path of nivṛtti. Only then does human birth become fruitful. But today even the elders teach children only the things of the world, and do not teach the principle of the heart. What greatness is there in enjoying the things of the world? From the day he is born until the day he dies, man keeps on enjoying them. Does he gain even the least peace in this? No. Where, in truth, is peace?

With an atom bomb held in their hand, they keep shouting, “Peace, peace”; even though they can reach the moon, they cannot attain peace and happiness.
