Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

We must recognise such a principle and go on attaining God through faith itself. Whatever effort you make without believing in God, all of it turns out useless. You call your body ‘I’, but can you speak of the principle that is endless? So do not enter into what you do not understand. First of all, the principle in you is that faith. That itself is the consciousness in you. Without this consciousness, you are not. First close your eyes, meditate inwardly and recognise the Ātma principle. ‘By practice, tasks are achieved on earth.’ Without sādhana we cannot achieve anything. So only after doing sādhana and achieving it inwardly may you take up argument and counter-argument. First recognise the principle of your body. This is a physical body. In it are limbs of all kinds. The limbs are not I. I am precisely the one who is in all the limbs. This is my hand. My fingers. What are fingers? Only when five fingers came together did it become a hand. If you keep inquiring in this way, what is in everything is one alone. Understanding the spiritual principle is hard. You must not drop it, saying, ‘It is hard, hard.’ We need not acquire the goods and vehicles of the world. If we attain that Ātma principle which is there, we become those who have attained everything. You must put a question to yourself about each thing. Who am I? Who am I? If you keep saying, ‘Who am I?’, it will surely be understood. In what form is this ‘I’? It is in the formless. So you must believe the principle of ‘I’ to be the Ātma principle. Many people ascribe many forms to the Ātma. Not at all. First of all you must show the power of consciousness to the principle of ‘I’. The power of consciousness that is in man is in nothing else.

Embodiments of Prema! For you who are students, the spiritual is not so easily understood. But if you nourish faith, it will surely be understood easily.

Lacking the two eyes called faith, men on earth have become blind.

What is Prema? Even that you cannot understand. Darkness.. Who saw the darkness? Shut your eyes. What do you see? You see darkness. Who is the one who sees the darkness? There must be someone who sees that darkness, must there not. Without that seer, how can you say it is darkness? So everything has a form of some kind. We must take one object as the basis. That is the very sādhana of seeking true Satya. If we want to see that reality, faith is needed. Through that faith itself, make your journey. Without faith you cannot make the journey. You are going somewhere. When you do not know where you are going, where can you arrive? First you must decide, ‘I am going to the temple.’ Whether there is a temple or not, you must come to a decision that you are going to the temple. You can reach the temple. Not knowing where you are going, how will you get there? So first you must keep in mind that the Ātma is God. If you keep this Ātma in mind, you may wander anywhere. In a journey of this kind you must understand the Ātma principle.

Embodiments of Prema! You do not know even what Prema means. You love on seeing the body. You love on seeing wealth. You love on seeing form. You love on seeing behaviour. Where did the behaviour come from? Where did the form come from? Where did the wealth come from? Where did the beauty come from? You do not recognise what the basis of looks and charm is. For a while, seeing this, you call it love. But how long will that love last? It is changing. There is no use in loving this changing thing. We must go on loving the principle that does not change.
