Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

There is no fragrance. That is why there must be human feelings in the human heart. Only when human feelings arise in us do we become true human beings. Otherwise we are human beings in form alone. Artificial Man. This is not right for us. Art is outside. Heart is inside. All art has come from the heart. Following art, we are forgetting the heart.

Love of God. First of all we must love the Paramātma. More than all the fortunes we must gain in life, more than all desires, more than all fruits, what we must achieve first of all is Prema for the Paramātma. That is Love of God. If that one thing is there, we must not hurt others. That is the embodiment of Prema, the abode of Prema. It does not try to hurt or to harm another. That is why: fear of sin. It is right there that the fear of sin sets out. Along with love of God, fear of sin comes at once, as its pair. When this fear of sin and love of God are both joined: morality in society. We develop morality in society. That morality itself is our race. It is the light of our life. So try to develop morality. There may be a man without caste. But if there is a man without morality, it becomes dangerous. Morality means good conduct. Only when it is joined to this good conduct is it true education.

The honour of a race rests on morality; a race without morality is ruined; a race that has morality is the true race; listen, heroic son of Bhārata.

That race is the true human race. So, since we take ourselves to be human, we must try to live by morality and right conduct, and to lead an ideal life. Only then shall we have gained a fruit worthy of reading so many books and receiving training in so many ways. Otherwise, what is the use? Lugging all the books along in bags, like great big bundles. After we finish these studies, there is no work for us at all. Jobs do not come to us. From this day on we are practising carrying bundles, so that we can live by carrying bundles at some bus stand or other. Is this what we do for having studied so much? We must not become slaves. The beast becomes a slave and lives bowed and cowering before the world. Man must turn into Nārāyaṇa and become the leader who rules this world. We must become not a beast but Paśupati. Such learning we must study today. Thus: ‘Ādhyātmavidyā vidyānāṃ.’ Above all kinds of learning, spiritual learning is the most necessary.

So in our life we must achieve three things first of all. The human values, they said, are Satya, Dharma, Śānti, Prema and Ahiṃsā. There is room for us to explain them, or to inspire the minds of others, or to complain.
