In plain words

In this most holy land of Bhārata, forbearance itself is our beauty; of all the vows, the one that has won the brightest lustre, a noble character true to Satya, is itself the hardest tapas; if you ask what is the sweetest feeling in our land, what is worthier of honour than the feeling for a mother? Honour itself is greater than life, says the moral code of our land; burning it to ashes, they sought out the codes of foreign lands and have handed to our day, in haste, the drawn sword of a strange thing called freedom. Alas! What shall I say of the rule of Bhārata? Just as the elephant knows nothing of its own strength, so have our people of Bhārata become today.

A nation's honour stands on its morality; a nation without morality goes to ruin; a nation that has morality is a true nation indeed; I tell you the plain truth.
