Passage 2

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

So you, the future uplifters of Bhārata, must take fitting steps to develop this unity and fellow-feeling. Politics, holding to divide and rule, has kept splitting Bhārata in many ways. We must not divide. Unity is great strength. To practise it is itself a mighty power. Bhārata has advanced in science. Though it has advanced greatly in science, this knowledge can shine to some degree only when Viveka joins it. Viveka needs knowledge. For knowledge, practice to some degree is vital. knowledge without action is useless. action without knowledge is foolishness. Today there is knowledge but no action. There is action but no knowledge. Only when Viveka goes together with knowledge can it shine. In any small matter, in moral, religious, spiritual and worldly matters too, divisions of this kind are making many splits. Besides, they keep teaching distorted meanings.

When you inquire what in the world is free of selfishness, God alone is free of selfishness. Mother, father, wife and children may have some selfishness, more or less. But in God there is no selfishness of any kind. When you think about God's deeds, there seems to be selfishness. He protected Prahlāda and punished Hiraṇyakaśipu. He protected Vibhīṣaṇa and punished Rāvaṇa. He punished Kaṃsa. Seen in this way, you may think that protection and punishment are bound up with selfishness. God is not there to punish the wicked or to protect the good. These are man's misunderstandings. It is the very nature of good and bad. One's own goodness itself protects one. One's own badness itself punishes one.

God is not in some other land; God dwells in one's own body. Sin is not in some other, foreign land; it clings to the deeds one does.

Punishment and protection do not come about through God. God is only the Sākṣī of both, not their cause. Because teachings of Satya like these are not given in the world, ordinary people find it hard to recognise this Satya.
