Passage 9

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

"F.F.S. Father of five sons: F.T.D. Father of Ten Daughters," he said. These are our titles. Is this what we must earn today?

Are these the bonds we should long for? All these bonds are, for us, nothing but a cause of sorrow …, and nothing else. "Whatever depends on another is sorrow; whatever depends on the Ātma is happiness": have faith in the Ātma. Rely on the Ātma. But do not rely on others. God alone is the support of everything. Today we must take part in the right kind of service. We must enter … into sacrifice. That is why Vedānta has said that a branch heavy with fruit is better than a hand that makes no sacrifice. That is, the tree is better than man. "Better the ox that ploughs the land than an educated blockhead," they said. That at least ploughs the land, raises crops and does the country good. What is this educated blockhead doing? He is trying to earn money. So hands that make no sacrifice are no more than the branch of a tree. A man whose heart does not melt is a hard, stone-hearted man. We must make our hearts melt. We must stir the mind. We must enter into service. We must cultivate the principle of Prema. This is the sacred principle of Bhakti. This is the spiritual citta. This is unity in multiplicity. The principle of the Ātma in Divinity. This is our sacredness. We must attain this sacredness. We need not go off somewhere and search. Search within your own heart.

What we call God is not in some other land; what we call God is in one's own body; what we call sin is not in a foreign land; it clings to the very deeds one does.

Embodiments of Prema! Hoping that you will develop such sacred feelings in your hearts, do the right kind of service from now on, raise up the sacredness of Bhārat once again and give an ideal to the whole world, and blessing you, I bring my talk to a close. Keep Prema as your goal. Prema alone will bring … . It will make you experience everything.
