In plain words
This itself is the mark of a true heart. If these very marks are missing, it is no heart at all; it is like a log of wood, like a slab, like a stone. Only because this compassion is there was it given the name ‘hṛdayam’ in man. That is why men too are called mankind. Without Kindness, how can he become man? That is why we must cultivate this kindness in the heart. There should not be anyone at all whom we call an enemy. But on some occasions, taking account of the sway of their circumstances, we have to show some hatred. That is only temporary; it is not permanent. They are traits we must show a little in order to change them. But we must keep on controlling hatred as far as we can. To think you are greatly educated merely because of this bookish knowledge: this is madness.
Education Is Not for a Salary: It Is for Life
Students! What you must recognise first of all is this: you must remove from your heart the evil notion that education is for jobs. What are these jobs? They are needed, of course, to support a family. But education has not come into being to support a family. Does the man with no learning at all not support a family? You can lead your life with goodness of so many kinds. You can do work. You can take up jobs. But the notion that this study came into being for the sake of a job, at least, must go far from you. For this very reason I said:
Are all who have learned to read and write truly men of learning? Does one become educated by gaining a college degree? Is learning without true Jñāna and good deeds learning at all? If learning is for living, do the beasts and birds not live!
