In plain words
He was the one born from an anthill. Anthills grew over him, snakes moved about on him. So the Rāmāyaṇa is what was born from the anthills. In the anthill that is your heart are snakes called bad qualities and bad habits. If they are all to come out, you must remember the Name of God. Just as all the snakes in an anthill come out when the nādasvaram is played, so when you do nāmasmaraṇa all the bad qualities in your heart go away.
The Name of Hari, the Name of Hari, the Name of Hari alone; in Kali there is no other way, no other way, no other way at all.
Nāmasmaraṇa is very sacred. It is because nāmasmaraṇa has fallen off today that suffering is growing in the country. Do nāmasmaraṇa in every street. Fill every atom, every particle of the body with the Name of God. The Ānanda, the courage and daring that come from nāmasmaraṇa come from nothing else. It does not matter what others think; even if they mock you, you need not mind. “He is an I.A.S. officer, isn’t he! Even he is doing nāmasmaraṇa!” some may think. To do nāmasmaraṇa, what does it matter who one is? The heart is one and the same for all, is it not! If one is an I.A.S. officer, may he not do nāmasmaraṇa? Whoever one may be, young or old, poor or rich, all must remember the Name of God. Fools who know nothing may mock, but no one with sense will do so. If someone comes to you: “What’s this, sir? Do you too believe in God? Do you too do nāmasmaraṇa?”: if he asks you this, then: “Yes. Am I so great that I cannot remember the Name of God? Not only I: you, your father, your grandfather, your great-grandfather, all must do nāmasmaraṇa”: that is how you must answer. You must ask him, “If you do not do nāmasmaraṇa, what use is it to have been born a man at all?” “I have no faith in God,” he says. “If you have none, leave it alone. I have faith. Your God may not be there for you. But who are you to say that my God is not there for me?”: with these words you must firmly set him right.
