In plain words

Think on His feet.

From rising out of sleep until you go to sleep again, for the belly spending without limit or reckoning, your life and your learning poured away, the lotus-eyed Lord forgotten, what great happiness have you gained? Think it over with a willing heart, O man!

What have you achieved? What must be achieved is the love of God. If His love alone is there, everything can be achieved. So yearn for that love alone. You need not grieve over worldly troubles that pass in a moment. That is not the right path.

Divine Ānanda is beyond words and the mind

From ancient times the Vedānta of Bhārata has taught just this truth and has given Ānanda of many kinds.

The body is made of the five elements; the body must fall one day, for certain; the indweller is free of every ill; considered rightly, for the indweller birth and death and the marks of the bonds tied by delusion do not exist; seen truly, that indweller is the God of gods; considered in the mind, He is the form of the Ātma!

Yearn to attain that divinity. No one can describe the Ānanda of that divinity as "it is like this, it is like that". It is beyond the reach of speech and mind. ‘Yato vāco nivartante aprāpya manasā saha’: this Ānanda cannot be reached by the mind or by speech. Worldly joy is bound up with limits. A worldly bond goes with limits. This goes beyond limit. It is a principle that transcends. That is divine Ānanda. That is eternal Ānanda. That is the Ānanda of yoga. That is the Ānanda of non-duality. But even the spiritual aspirants of today are doing sādhanas of many kinds for the sake of joys that are momentary and mean. To call that sādhana is a great insult. Sā…dhana: dhana means what we have earned by effort. Learning is a wealth. Health is a wealth. All our powers are wealth. Money, gold, goods, vehicles and the rest are wealth. What does wealth mean? What is gained in human life is wealth. What is gained by sādhanas are the three that begin with sa: sālokya, sārūpya and sāyujya. The wealth gained through divinity is the true wealth. To give such wealth, God comes down as an Avatāra in age after age.

Whenever there is a decline of Dharma, O Bhārata, and Adharma rises up, then I bring Myself forth.

God is Time itself

The Kṛta age began in the month of Vaiśākha. The Tretā age began in the month of Māgha. The Dvāpara age began in the month of Mārgaśira. That is why He said, "Of the months I am Mārgaśira." The Kali age began in the month of Caitra. This Caitra is of the lunar reckoning, not the solar. What does yuga mean? Yuga means divinity. A yuga is what begins with divinity and ends with divinity itself. The yugas are God's creation. The beginning of the yugas is Ugādi. He Himself is the one who sustains as well. He is the very form of Time. That is why God, in what is called the Ātma, is joined with time. He has been called Kālātma. While time swallows the body, the one who swallows time is God. Time is in His power. God has been given the name ‘Saṃvatsarāya namaḥ’. Saṃvatsara means the One who is God's own form. It is a yuga only when it begins with God. It has no end at all. To think that such a year, without end, immortal, deathless and divine, begins on one particular day is small-mindedness.

We want Hari, not Siri

Today we think that Ugādi has begun. What does Kali mean? People think of Kali as something terrible, something that brings hardships. No, no. The age of Kali is joined with remembering the Name.

The Name of Hari, the Name of Hari, the Name of Hari alone; in Kali there is no other way, none, none, none.

It has been said that in this Kali age there is nothing beyond remembering the Name. Kali means that which is joined with the Name. But the man of today has forgotten the Name of Hari. He keeps the name of Siri in mind. There are many who long for Siri, but few who long for Hari.
