In plain words
The name of Hari, the name of Hari, the name of Hari alone; in Kali there is no other way, no other way, no other way at all.
Remembrance of which name? We must remember the name of Rāma. The name of Rāma carries authority in every age. In the Tretā age the demonic was rooted out and the Divine went on growing only because the ṛṣis kept remembering the name of Rāma.
The name of Rāma is a mantra as precious as life to Śaivas and Vaiṣṇavas
In the two letters ‘Rāma’ lies a most sacred principle. The whole essence of the Rāmāyaṇa is in the name of Rāma itself. The Rāmāyaṇa has some thousands of ślokas. Who is able to recite so many thousands of ślokas? That is why the ṛṣis said it is enough to remember the name of Rāma. They said that in this Kali age there is no way across greater than the remembrance of the Name. These are two letters, just two - ‘Rāma’; if you remember these two letters with all your heart, that is enough. Neither disease nor attachment clings to those who remember the name of Rāma. It is a mantra as precious as life to both Śaivas and Vaiṣṇavas alike. How so? To the eight-letter mantra “Om Namo Nārāyaṇāya”, the letter ra is as precious as life. If you take ‘rā’ out of these eight letters.... “Om Namo Nāyaṇāya”.... It becomes a mantra without life. In the same way, to the five-letter mantra “Namaśśivāya”, the letter ma is as precious as life. If you take the letter ‘ma’ out of it.... “Naśśivāya”... It becomes inauspicious. The ra of the eight-letter mantra and the ma of the five-letter mantra: these two joined together are none other than the name of Rāma. That is why, from the Tretā age to this day, they have given the name of Rāma such great importance.
Here is the sweet called the name of Rāma; come, devotees! Eating and eating the sweets found on earth, do not turn into fools and come to ruin! Into the wheat flour of the Veda's essence pouring the milk of the Vedic word, taking the great vessel of Ānanda, the sages of old mixed it well. Here is the sweet called the name of Rāma; come, devotees!
