In plain words
At dusk the moon is the lamp; at dawn the sun is the lamp; for the three worlds Dharma is the lamp; good sons are the lamp of the family.
Embodiments of Prema! Virtue is far more important than Jñāna, Vijñāna, Sujñāna and Prajñāna. Only a virtuous son is truly great. Vināyaka is just such a virtuous son. Every person has a guru. But for Vināyaka there is no guru of any kind. He Himself is the leader of all. That is precisely why He bears the name Vināyaka, a name true to its meaning. Whatever the worship, they begin it only after first praying to Vināyaka. Even before beginning a music concert, they pray, ‘Vināyaka, protect me.’
Vināyaka has an elephant's head. What is its inner meaning? In intelligence, in good qualities and in enquiry, Vināyaka is the equal of the elephant. An elephant takes a step forward only after weighing every matter with fitting care. In the same way, Vināyaka moves forward only after examining what is eternal and what is not. The letters ‘Ga ṇa pati’ give the meaning that He is endowed with Vijñāna, Sujñāna and Prajñāna. If you set such a Vināyaka aside, no worship you do is of any use. Whatever worship you do or leave undone, the worship of Vināyaka you must never forget. The chief duty of students is to take Vināyaka, the leader of all, as their own leader. When we take Vināyaka as our ideal and follow Him, every kind of learning comes to us. His belly is very big. That is to say, it is full of nothing but Jñāna! That very thing is His chief power. To all, He Himself is mother, He Himself is father. That is why
You alone are mother, and father You alone; You alone are kin, and friend You alone; You alone are learning, and wealth You alone; You alone are my all, O God of gods,
