Passage 8

In plain words

Under the influence of place, time and circumstance, strange notions too are growing in the Kali age. They try to give God worthless rubbish and ask for the best. This is not true prayer. This is not true Bhakti. You have one thing of worth. You must offer that precious heart to God. Mīrā said this very thing:

The heart that You gave me, O Lord, that I offer again, O glorious One; what else, in truth, could I bring for the worship of Your feet?

There is nothing more for me to bring. I am offering You what You gave. Even this is not mine. This alone is true, perfect Bhakti. Who gave it? You Yourself. What is Yours I offer to You alone. But not everyone comes to such Viveka. They stand in the Gaṅgā, they stand in the Godāvarī, they stand in the Kṛṣṇā. Keśavāya namaḥ, Nārāyaṇāya namaḥ, Mādhavāya namaḥ: they offer the Gaṅgā's water to the Gaṅgā herself. And they imagine they are bringing and offering something of their grandfather's property! The very feeling "I am doing it" is a great and evil feeling. There is nothing that you do. If only you are pure in citta, He Himself will do all that has to be done. The mother lays the infant down in the cradle. But this child depends on its mother for everything, and it is the mother herself who keeps serving that child, moment by moment, as each need arises. That is, for the sādhaka who lives in Śaraṇāgati, God Himself looks after everything. But not everyone attains so holy and lofty a state. Even feeling that this is beyond us, we must not fall prey to discouragement and despair. We must make our own effort. God's grace, too, reaches us only on the strength of our effort. So we must try to do what we have to do in the proper way, with the right citta. The śāstras, the Vedas, the Itihāsas and the Upaniṣads are all only steps of a kind to bring man to his goal. The essence of all the Vedas, the essence of all the Upaniṣads, the goal of all the Vedānta, is the one God. The paths are many and various. To take the paths as different and on that ground to think God is different is madness. So we must keep this goal alone as our aim and make the effort needed to become blessed. We do pūjā with many kinds of flowers. Some want to bring roses alone and do their pūjā. Some others wish to offer lotuses alone.
