In plain words
Friendship is the very oneness of the guṇas sattva, rajas and tamas! You must gain friendship. You are my friend. God is my friend. Worldly friends look at the money in the pocket. They look at Father position. If Father position is sound and there is money in his pocket, many friends come: ‘Hello! Hello!’ No rupee note in the Pocket, father has retired. Then the friends do not even say Good bye. What friends are these! worldly friends. Who is the true friend? God is the real friend. He is always with you, in you, around you, above you, below you. That friend never leaves you.
All your kin come as far as the doorway, as far as the burning-ground; the friend in need, who breaks your bonds and never leaves you, is the Name of God, my dear!
God alone is the friend in need. Wherever you go, He comes along with you. He is with you, beside you, in your home, before your eyes. We must win such friendship. Bali Cakravarti, thinking of Him with love, made himself an offering. There are people who give away wealth, gold, goods, vehicles and the like. You may give land. You may give food. You may give clothes. But Bali Cakravarti did not do so. He gave himself away. That is the true, great value. It is not that he gave some three feet. He gave himself. ‘Do what You will! I am giving my own self,’ he said.
The heart that You gave me, O Lord, that same I offer back to You, great One; truly, what else could I bring for the worship of Your feet? I join my palms to You; receive it, Lord.
What am I to bring You? If we think of bringing Gaṅgā water, You Yourself are Gaṅgā! If we would bring flowers from a tree and offer them, who made those flowers? You! If we would bring fruits from some market and offer them, on which tree did those fruits grow? That is why Vedānta has been teaching the full inner meaning.
