Passage 14

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The heart that You gave me, O Lord, that same I offer back to You, great One; what else could I bring for Your worship? I fold my hands in salutation: accept it, Lord.

With these words, offer it. The ‘heart’ is not mine. It is the very thing You gave. What You gave, take it back Yourself. What You gave is offered to You alone. When you offer everything of yours for the pleasure of God, all is filled with joy. There is no need to do any other service specially. If there is Prema alone, all services are Prema itself. That is why what has no Prema is doing for the sake of the fruit. What is joined with Prema is doing it as service. All that is done with Prema is service itself. What is done without Prema, even if it is a hard deed, is doing it only for the sake of the fruit. You must become God's own. When you become His own, you have no sorrows of any kind. An example.

Recognise that God is an old friend of yours

There is a householder. That householder has a wife and children. But he has set up a big garden. In this garden he has set two gardeners. All these gardeners keep working. But of those who come every day, one, when evening comes: ‘Sir! Give me my day's wage,’ he says, and takes it. Another comes month by month and says, Give me my salary. But the wife who is at home keeps working, not for a month but for years. Does she ask, Give me a salary, give me wages? No. The children all work too. The mother asks no wages at all for these children. Do not pray to God. Fight with right. O God! You are all-merciful. ‘You are the kinsman in danger, the protector of the helpless’: if you go on praying like this, God becomes a stranger to us.
