In plain words
The heart that You gave me, O Lord, that same heart I offer back to You, O glorious One; what else, in truth, could I bring for the worship of Your feet? With joined palms I offer it: receive it, O Lord!
It is enough if you offer back to God the heart God gave you. But man today, though highly learned and brilliant, is sinking in ignorance.
Though he studies all there is to study and grows very discerning, the dull-witted man does not know himself in his heart; however much he studies, whatever way he lives, the base man cannot give up his bad qualities. Study pursued again and again ends only in argument; full Jñāna he never attains. Why study all there is to study, only to die? You must study the learning that knows no death.
Man studies merely to earn his bread. The more he studies, the more his doubts about God grow. Such a one is not a man at all. Only one who has a pure heart is a man. Do you know why you were given eyes? To look at everything? No, no. To see God. But some, even when Swami comes and stands before them, close their eyes and sit in meditation. That is nothing but sham meditation! Such a person must have been blind in some birth. Or else he will go blind, in the coming birth at least. To close your eyes when God is before you is ignorance. You must open your eyes and look well. Along with the physical eyes, you must open the eye of Jñāna too, and see.
“Do you know why you were given a tongue? To lift morsels of food to the mouth? No: to utter the Name of God with a full voice.”
