Passage 11

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

In that one and in this one, the Ātma is one. There we must take the unity. That is why unity itself is purity. Purity itself is divinity. That alone we must take. But delusions of every crazy sort, “I must marry that one, I must marry this one”, must not come. Without our knowing it, that keeps growing into a mountain of sin. Such thoughts must not enter us. Chī! Such thoughts have come to me! A small example. You have a sister. If a stranger mocks your sister, how much it hurts you. When we behave mockingly and indecently towards another person, how much their brothers suffer; all such things are not good. Sin means this. “Sin is not found in a foreign land; it clings to the deeds one does”: we must grow a feeling of this kind. We must see everyone as the very principle of Prema. If we develop this equal vision, there is no tapas greater than this, no sādhana greater than this. And you children of ours, cut down your talking a little. less talk more work. We must not ruin our strength by needless talk. Besides this, we must be careful in matters concerning women.

Since you are all gathered here, I am reminding you of one more thing too. Now certain incurable diseases are spreading. Through such diseases the very world is being greatly ruined. What is the reason? Such diseases begin only in those whose conduct is not right. You know. aids is very dangerous. Merely by being near, that disease catches us. It is enough for clothes to touch, and it comes to us. Such evil diseases are coming up in their hundreds in Bhārata too. You must be extremely careful. You must keep your conduct pure. Such diseases arise from the mixing of two or three bloods. “character is 3/4 th of life,” it has been said. Those who lose that character get such diseases. At that time they fall without knowing anything at all, but afterwards they meet great hardships.

Just ahead, and soon, comes the old folk's festival called old age; tai tai, tai tai, dancing doll, see the fun of it, this doll of māyā.

Is this the fun we are to achieve! This is not fun. This is dangerous. Take care in things like this. You must teach such things to your other friends: “Crazy fellow! You must not behave like this.” If all of you keep good conduct, earn a good name, and win fine renown with long life and health, that is just what I want. I want nothing else. Whether you work or not, make your parents happy. Keep healthy. Be exemplary students.

For the 70th birthday, you think there will be many kinds of service. I am telling you My secret too. I never have any secret. You may wonder whether Swami has some secretary. Who needs a secretary? One who has secrets needs a secretary, but for Me, no secrets, no secretary. I have no one. Till now I have not held out My hand and asked anyone. A pure resolve alone brings everything about. You too, make pure resolves. Your work will surely be fulfilled. At the last birthday, people in Rāyalasīma were suffering for water; I made them a promise. Jogarao said, “Swami! You spoke of 200 crores. This is not enough. We do not have it. Swami must resolve on some way,” he said. “Except for the devotees, I never make a resolve for Myself,” I said. In our Bhārata, if we begin good works, there is no shortage of anything. Our Bhārata is wealthy. Many of you may think it is a poor country. A great mistake. Students! The wealth of Bhārata is in no other country. If Bhārata were really a poor country, why did the French, the Turks and the British come to invade it? They came only because there was great wealth. How many came, how many times, to invade it! If there were nothing, why would they come to invade? There is plenty. To your eyes it looks as if there is nothing. We lack nothing. I told the Trust that they must not ask anyone. “If I learn that anyone has asked, I will remove him at once,” I said. I told them they must not take money from anyone. No one knows this. I am saying it now. The Germans came. “Swami! We will take on three hundred villages,” they said. The Japanese came. They said they would take on 200 villages. A gentleman from Malaysia said he would take on 400 villages. The Australians said they would take on a hundred villages. Between them and Me there is a heart to heart connection. But it is not tied to money. They will build this. They will supply the water. In this way the money has kept growing a great deal. So yesterday we went to the Tuṅgabhadrā dam, went to the Pennar dam, and saw them. In these borewells water may come for a time, and for a time it may go. For small villages we must certainly sink borewells. And My intention is to make that too permanent. The government ordered that a canal be dug. You know these government works. I did not accept those plans. They dig canals. They bring drinking water through canals. What pollution comes into drinking-water canals! Already air, water and sound have become polluted. I do not like to defile drinking water. If a canal runs alongside, the landholder on this side and the landholder on that side put in pumps and draw off the water.
