In plain words
Tṛṣṇā, tṛṣṇā, tṛṣṇā: what does it mean? Thirst. This thing called thirst has some limits. Yet there is no end to it. When we are thirsty we drink water, and that lasts only for a while. When thirst comes again, we must drink water. As long as there is life, there is no escape from thirst. As long as there is thirst, there is no escape from drinking water. These desires are like thirst … like thirst. That is why: it is not right, not right, this thirst for wealth, O jīva. This thirst arises in everything.
In childhood, together with many others, he is one with games and songs; when youth comes, like the god of the flower-bow, he roams about, lost in women; in middle age, sunk in the things of this world, he clings to the earning of wealth; when old age comes, never thinking of Murahari, he laments, 'This is missing, that is missing'; bound by all kinds of desires, unable to let them go, in the end man mingles his life with the dust.
In childhood he passes his time happily in games and songs, studies and schooling, and things of that kind. Meanwhile youth arrives. In that youth, relying on the strength of his muscles and the strength of his heart, not knowing earth from sky, never weighing who is elder and who younger, never learning the difference between good and bad, he struts about like a madman and wastes his life in many ways. Through such feelings and thoughts, his life becomes a bondage. Then, as soon as one or two children are born, to raise them up somehow and to earn money, he must build houses, buy land, buy cars, buy a motorcycle; with desires like these he suffers all the more. Meanwhile old age comes crashing in. Then his sons do not listen to what he says, nor does his wife. They tell him to sit in a corner. By then he keeps brooding and grieving over the time gone by and the things gone by.
Beauty, youth, the strength of the senses: do not strut about thinking you have them, brother; ahead of you, and soon, lies old age, the crocodiles' feast.
When we look ahead and reflect on what our life is, we have to fall prey to troubles of many kinds.
