Passage 7

In plain words

Purity, patience, perseverance

The young men of today look at their youth and grow proud. There are no words to say how much they are spoiling their strength. They are destroying humanness itself.

Beauty, youth and the strength of the senses: do not strut, brother, because you have them! it lies ahead of you, and soon, the crocodiles' festival called old age. You cannot move about, your eyes grow dim, on your face wrinkles have formed, your head has turned grey, has it not! calling you an old monkey, the little ones at you giggle, and you snap at them, puppet! Tai tai tai tai tai, puppet! See the fun of it, you leather puppet!

In old age the eyes do not see properly. Wrinkles form on the face, and the head turns grey. The strength of the senses wastes away. All these are sufferings that come from misusing the senses. So do good works, take part in service to society, engage in helping others. Through such good deeds, however many years pass, the strength of your body will not decline. Many people, “Swami! Even at the age of 75, how strong You are! How radiant You are!” they exclaim in wonder. Then I tell them. “The reason for this is the three P's that are in Me. The first P, Purity; the second P, Patience; the third P, Perseverance.” If these three are in you, you too will stay strong however old you grow. Beauty does not belong to the body; it belongs to character, it belongs to purity.
