Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

He suffers somewhat, short of breath. So if there is no discipline in our food, ill health takes shape. Lack of discipline is the root cause of ill health. In the body the root cause of all diseases is the stomach. If anything goes wrong in the stomach, all diseases break out in the body. So you must fill three parts with food and leave one part empty. Only when it goes this way is there discipline. You must follow discipline every day. From dawn till you lie down at night, whatever we do, we must do it all with discipline. Sitting, walking, drinking, eating: all must be in discipline. Only then is life in an orderly way.

This discipline itself is true karma yoga. This karma yoga itself gives skill in action. Man is entitled to action. We must be those entitled to action. What kind of karma must it be? It must be karma kept within limits. You must bow to the command of God. Whatever we follow at each part of the day, we must follow it without breaking the order. Only then can we become learned. What does vit mean? Jñāna. This is the way to gain that Jñāna.

I have read the books, I have looked through all the śāstras fully, I have learned peerless learning: why this pride? If you cannot fold your two hands and worship the Paramātma with devotion, all this present learning is futile on earth, O man!

I have read books. You should not be proud, thinking, 'I have plenty of bookish knowledge.' We must fold our two hands. This is the first step in spiritual life. What is this folding of the two hands? Namaskāra. What is the inner meaning of namaskāra? Making the five organs of action and the five organs of knowledge one: that is namaskāra. The principle of the one Ātma is the true Ātma principle. In spiritual life namaskāra is very important. It holds a great deal of meaning. Na-mama. Not I. Namaskāra means, 'Not I. All is Yours, Swami!' Making this offering is the inner meaning of namaskāra. That is why, from the moment you rise at dawn till you lie down at night, you must keep discipline in every task. But the people of today do not know what discipline is. They do not know at all what control of the senses is.
