Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

From good friendship good feelings arise in us. We must form ties with sāttvic people.

In good company, detachment; in detachment, freedom from delusion; in freedom from delusion, the unmoving Principle; in the unmoving Principle, liberation in this life.

You must take sāttvic food. Some say, ‘We cannot find sāttvic food.’ Can you not find vegetables? Can you not find leafy greens? Leaving them aside, you long for food that develops rajoguṇa and tamoguṇa. In truth, at the very first only sāttvic qualities arise in you. What is the reason? Because you drink mother's milk, take cow's milk and eat food without salt, chilli or sourness, the sāttvic guṇa alone forms in you. But little by little, through your food and your ways, you increase rajoguṇa and tamoguṇa. You must tell your parents too, ‘Give me only sāttvic food.’ If instead you go on eating rājasic and tāmasic food such as meat and fish every day, harming living beings all the while, how will the sāttvic guṇa come to you?! Only when we eat sāttvic food will the sādhanas we do bear fruit too.

To gain good qualities, eat sāttvic food

Embodiments of Prema! All our senses depend on the guṇas. All our guṇas depend on the food we eat. So only when we eat sāttvic food, do sāttvic work and keep sāttvic ‘friendship’ do we become sāttvic. Bad company itself is the root cause of bad qualities. If good qualities are to come, you must eat sāttvic food. All our qualities are formed by food and habits alone.

Students! If at this stage you nurture anger, inner burning, envy, jealousy and the like and turn your mind into ‘poison’, your whole life will go to waste.
