Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Never mind if any ‘property’ is lost; but we must take care never to lose our humanness. Humanness is our chief ‘property’. Man must always be happy, scattering smiles. But to laugh without reason is not good.

Join good company and cultivate good feelings

Man must be healthy. Health does not mean only the health of the body; our intentions too must be healthy. We must develop good thoughts. This is what is called ‘health of the mind’. Good deeds give rise to good feelings. When good feelings arise, bad feelings are burned to ash. Love all, serve all. Only then will you be those who have nourished complete health. We must do good deeds and enjoy good fruit. Only then will good health come to us. Good health brings good thoughts. If pure thoughts are to come, the food we take must be pure. We must not eat food that is not fit to be eaten. We do not offer God just anything, do we! We must offer God pure, sāttvic food in a clean vessel. We must eat the pure things that have been offered to God.

Through our food and our pastimes some bad feelings keep coming to us. To cultivate good feelings we must enter good company. There must be no envy, anger or Ahaṅkāra. Tell me your company, I shall tell you what you are. If you are in good company, you will become good; in bad company, you will become bad.

From good company comes detachment; from detachment, freedom from delusion; from freedom from delusion, the unwavering principle; from the unwavering principle, liberation in this life.
