Passage 4

In plain words

But because the ‘clouds’ of desires come and gather, you do not see the Ātma.

All we do forgetting God is waste!

When clouds come in the way in the sky, the moon does not appear. For that alone you must not say the moon is not there. The moon is there. If you want to see it, have a little patience. As soon as the clouds move away, the moon appears. ‘The moon was born from the mind; the sun was born from the eye.’ In the sky of our heart the moon of the Ātma is shining. Our ‘thoughts’ and ‘desires’ come and keep covering it like ‘clouds’. In some seasons the ‘clouds’ come very thick. Then the moon does not appear at all. In just the same way, God is in the heart of each one. Because the clouds of your thoughts and desires are very thick, you do not see God. So you must control desires. Desires, nothing else, are covering the Ātma. The more you reduce desires, the better. In the language of Vedānta this very thing has been called ‘Vairāgya’. Day by day our body is growing. But the span of life is shrinking. So: Less luggage, more comfort makes travel a pleasure. If you reduce the ‘luggage’ of desires, life's journey will be ever so pleasant. Whatever books you read, whatever sacred histories you hear, if you do not reduce desires, there is no use. Now, everyone has desires. But some are of use, and some are of no use. In fact, the moment you rise at daybreak, you rise with desires.

From rising out of sleep until you go to sleep again, for the belly's sake you spend your life beyond all bounds and reckoning; you pour away your learning and forget the One whose eyes are lotus petals: what great happiness have you gained? Think it over gladly, O man!

Whatever we do forgetting God, it is nothing but waste. First of all we must keep God as our goal.
