Passage 5

In plain words

Padmaśrī, Padmavibhūṣaṇa: these titles came today and yesterday. In ancient times they gave all these holy titles to women alone. Illālu, Gṛhalakṣmī, Dharmapatnī, Ardhāṅgī: to whom did titles like these come? So, taking as their ideal the conduct of women, their feelings, their sacrifices and their virtues, they gave them all these titles. But through the influence of this Kali,

when the women all go off to do jobs, who are the housewives to finish the household tasks? When husband and wife both go off to offices, who are the women to stay at home? When they go to schools to teach other people's children, who are the mothers to teach their own children? When they take up books and go off like men, who are the women to set the kitchen in order? Though the trouble of having no money is over, how great is the want within the home! Look for happiness, and it is nothing but a zero, ever, for the woman who holds a salaried post.

People toil only for money; no one toils for the good name and honour of the home. Women certainly must study. They must study, and put what they have studied into practice. They must try to pass on to others what they have put into practice. Rules of this kind, that these women must not study, that these women must not become officials, that they must not go to offices, were laid down out of selfishness alone.
