Passage 2

parama pāvanamaina bhāratāvaniyandu

Also in his talks (26)

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

In the supremely holy land of Bhārata forbearance itself is our beauty; the one that shines out among all vows, the noble keeping of Satya, is the hardest tapas; if you ask what feeling is sweetest in our land, what is worthier of honour than the feeling for a mother?

In Bhārata, forbearance itself is our truthful conduct, and calm itself our protection. Born in so sacred a land as Bhārata, if you cannot protect the culture of this country, you may judge for yourselves what folly that is.

The young women and young men of today must pursue their studies and take up higher learning. But they should not study merely for the sake of jobs. They must proclaim to the world the ideal that lies in learning. But girl and boy students use their learning only for passing advantages; they do not study with the aim of living the culture of Bhārata, which is eternal and true. They do not recognise the truth that this study is meant to give society an ideal. Because they have studied, women vie with one another so that they too may take jobs.

If all women go out to work at jobs, who are the women to stay at home? If husband and wife both go to offices, who is the housewife to set the house in order? If they go to school to teach other people's children, who are the young women to teach their own? If they take up books and go off like men, who is the woman to cook in the house? Though the trouble of having no money is ended, how will the want within the home be ended? If one goes looking for happiness, it comes to nothing, does it not, ever, for the woman who holds a post!
