Passage 9

In plain words

We must recognise what is special in humanness

The man of today struggles for wealth, struggles for a job, struggles for power. This keeps growing more and more. But struggling for God is to be seen nowhere.

Though one speaks grandly of having wealth, there is not a speck of Śānti on earth; though one swaggers at having learning, there is not a speck of Śānti on earth. With evil thoughts in the head, with ears that listen to slander, with eyes that lie in wait to spy, with a mind that listens at the doors, with a heart bent on deceit, with words that cheat: seeing these deformities, justice will live no longer, brother; no virtue will stay in the heart, brother.

It is in the temple of the heart that Śānti dwells. Outside there is no Śānti. It is all pieces. To one who strives for true Śānti, everything comes. Wealth too comes looking for him. All riches and prosperity come looking for him. Pleasures and good fortune come seeking him. Power and fame come seeking him. He need not search himself. He need not cross his own threshold. He need not move a foot. Kaivalya comes and falls into his lap. What is heaven? Is it to lie on a Dunlop bed, turn on the air-conditioning, lay out good pillows, and think, ‘This is comfort, this is heaven’? What is this heaven? A heaven of sin. This heaven is enjoyed by the body of the five elements, and not by you, is it not!

The body made of the five elements is frail; when it will be cast off, no one knows. They have spoken of a span of a hundred years, but do not trust that word in your heart. In childhood, or in the prime of youth, or in old age, or in great old age, in the village, in the forest, or in the midst of the waters: where it will be cast off, no one knows. Death alone is certain for man. While his body is still there, to become wise and to know oneself: consider it, that is the principle of Dharma, the true path, the word of Śrī Sai!
