In plain words

Then when do you remember God? If you do not remember God, how will you gain purity? To attain purity, you must look on every task you do as God's work. Whatever you do, do it as God's work. At all times and in every state, you must remember God. A small example. When you breathe in, the sound ‘So…’ comes forth; when you breathe out, the sound ‘Haṃ…’. ‘So…’ means That; ‘Haṃ…’ means I. So ‘Soham’ means ‘I am God’. Beyond this, no other sādhana is needed. Though your inner voice teaches you the truth ‘I am God’ 21,600 times a day, you pay it no heed at all. Your body takes in oxygen, the support of life, and lets out poisonous carbon dioxide. In the same way, you must take in the good and let go of the bad. You must accept the ‘fruit’ and cast out the ‘filth’.

Negative, positive

The ear, the hand, the nose, the mouth and the rest are the limbs of the body. Society is made up of many bodies. So the body is a limb of society. Society is a limb of humanness. Humanness is a limb of Prakṛti. Prakṛti is a limb of Paramātma. Wherever you look in this world, all is nothing but a gathering of limbs and limbs within them. There is a bond between all things. Without that bond, the world itself could not exist. Whether one is far away in America or here in India, this bond holds. When there is a bond between televisions and between telephones, what wonder is there in a bond between human beings! The machines' bond is a made one; the bond of human beings is a natural bond of the heart. There are two kinds, the number call and the particular person call. If you make a number call, anyone at the other end may speak. But if you make a particular person call, only the one you wish to speak to will come and speak. A negative, worldly feeling is like a number call. ‘I want God’ is like a particular person call. When you have a deep longing for God, God Himself will come and speak with you. If instead you make the ‘number call’ of negative feelings, God cannot speak with you. The body is a negative, the mind is a negative, all your desires are negative. The conscience alone is positive. Hold to it as the chief thing.

The relation of cause and effect

Sādhana does not mean doing japa and dhyāna. Real sādhana is to look on whatever work you do as service of God. Every work is God's work. God is everywhere. With this very thing in view the Bhagavad Gītā said:

Everywhere are His hands and feet, everywhere His eyes, heads and faces; everywhere in the world He hears; He stands enveloping all.

‘No one knows I am doing this,’ you think. A great mistake. God is watching all the while. As the light is in the eyes, God is right within you. God alone is the support of all. Without God's will not even a blade of grass moves. From the ant to Brahmā, He pervades all. But unable to recognise this truth, some grow proud, thinking they are very wise and are doing many great deeds. Recognise this: the One who causes all to be done, who experiences and who enjoys, all of it is that God alone. Whether hardship comes to you or loss, think it is for your good. Then everything will turn out only good for you.
